Understanding Colorado’s New Ban-the-Box Law
This May, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed House Bill 19-1025, making Colorado the 12th state to implement a ban-the-box law. This law will take effect on September 1, 2019 for all employers with 11 or more employees, and on September 1, 2021 for all other employers, regardless of how many employees they have. Once it takes effect, this bill will directly change how employers can market open job positions to potential employees and what questions they may ask applicants during the hiring process. As this law takes effect next month, below is some information to better understand wha …

Why Employees Are Leaving (And How to Get Them to Stay)
It’s no secret that employees leave the companies they work for, whether they’ve been working there for three years or for just two weeks. Employee turnover is a constant in the job market, and as of 2018 it’s at the highest rate it’s been at in 10 years. This increase in turnover is a detriment to employers, as it’s expensive to continue replacing employees and training new hires to do work you already had someone else trained to do. While employees leave for a myriad of reasons, these reasons aren’t always the ones you’d expect. Not everyone l …

Employees Using Their Paid Time Off Benefits Everyone
A growing trend shows employees are taking fewer and fewer vacation days, with many not using the allocated paid time off their employer’s offer them. While this may not seem like a problem, research shows that not taking time off leads to a decrease in productivity, efficiency, and amount of work completed. Why Employees Aren’t Taking Time Off: Recent surveys indicate that workers aren’t taking their allotted vacation time off because they’re worried their manager won’t approve their vacation time when they present it to them or they’re worried t …

When Employer Dress Codes Discriminate Against Men
Many employers may think of schools when the term “dress code discrimination” comes to mind, as most of the popular stories in the news these days revolve around students – disproportionately female students – being reprimanded for not following strict, discriminatory dress codes. But workplace dress codes can be just as discriminatory, and can have a similar impact of disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. However, your company’s dress code may also be affecting non-marginalized communities, or simply one specific non-marginalized community &nd …

Two Perks That Your Employees Want the Most
Over the past decade we have been witnessing a shift away from the traditional 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM workspaces. Technology has helped pave the way for this, but the increasing need to both attract and retain top talent requires companies to consider changing their ways in terms of offering both flexible schedules and remote work options. An Accountemps poll found that 52% of employees thought flexible schedules were the best perk a company could offer, and 27% thought that early leave on Fridays was the best. The desire for work-life balance is strong with employees, especially with …

When it comes to hiring a new employee, in the absence of a “perfect” candidate, would you rather hire someone with:      1) The right experience and qualifications, but lacking in soft skills, OR      2) The soft skills that align with your corporate culture, but lacking experience and qualifications According to a recent survey of more than 2,000 professionals conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Yoh, a leading international talent and outsourcing company and part of Day and Zimmermann, three out of four Americans would choose #2 …

Have you ever stumbled across or met with a great candidate for your company, but didn’t hire them because you didn’t have a current opening? Job Postings & Descriptions - Are Yours ADEA Compliant?
Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 The ADEA, passed in 1967, prohibits discrimination in employment against individuals age 40 years and older. Today, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) receives over 20,000 age discrimination charges per year, which accounts for more than 20 percent of all discrimination charges.  Although not as much in the spotlight as sexual harassment and racism, age discrimination is more prevalent than people think, and cases are on the rise. Some notable recent cases related to hiring and interviewing practices: In 20 …

Don't Forget About the "I" in D&I
D&I = Diversity & Inclusion Most companies today understand both the benefits and importance of recruiting and hiring a diverse workforce that includes a range of ages, ethnicities, religions, social classes, physical abilities, and political and world views. But, once you have the diversity piece down, it’s critical for management to ensure the right culture is in place that promotes, supports, and encourages all employees – from top to bottom – to be aware of the inclusion side of the D&I formula.   In …

Increase Employee Retention - Get Your Employees Involved!
Retain or Recruit – Which is More Important? Many managers and executives would agree – it’s easier to keep good employees than to recruit, hire, and train new ones (although your company’s pipeline for new recruits has to be a constant focus as well).  In today’s extremely tight labor market - Colorado’s unemployment rate is just 3.0% in March 2018 - having a strong employee retention strategy is paramount in today’s war for talent. According to a recent CareerBuilder survey, the average cost of losing a good hire was $29,600 in 2017. …
